our sculptures are based on Minkisi power figures, which are material manifestations of spiritual entities, taking human or animal forms. various positive empowering objects including shells, nails, herbs, mirrors, charms. gemstones, beads, etc. are attached on or inside these sculptures to neutralize misfortune, promote a sense of well-being and to protect its owner. they are usually made from hard-shelled Lagenaria gourds which were a gift from Nature to all cultures since the beginning of time.
many of our images are burnt into the gourd...much like primitive man who only used the end of a charred tree branch. our colors come from a combination of dyes, stains, archival washes and the pigment from the Cochineal bug which we travel to Mexico for.
... our recyclabots, on the other hand, are wild and whimsical creations. the bodies are made from either boxes, gourds and/or tin cans, and completed with found and recycled objects, many of which were discarded before their time. it gives us enormous pleasure to resurrect these abandoned and forgotten treasures from our past and give them new life. it's our small way of giving something back to our already overburdened Planet.
